Meat can be acquired as a random drop from most Fauna. While it can be used as emergency food, consuming Meat gives the player Indigestion, meaning that it is much better to cook it.
Initially, the best recipe is Salami, which restores 47 food points, and has a perish time of 166 in-game hours. If Spice is available, then Canned Meat represents a fairly compact way to store food long-term. Otherwise, it can be crafted into Salami, which in turn is an ingredient in Emergency Ration (mid-to-late game).
